Montessori Fraction Circles

Math this week has been all about fractions. We talked briefly about the etymology of the word fraction; what does it means when you fracture your arm? It breaks into pieces.

We use a line to represent that fracture — I cut up some black strips for the lines and we talked about numerators and denominators. We reviewed these concepts all week. We talked about mixed and improper fractions. We briefly worked with multiplying fractions. I had intended to move more quickly through the presentations and introduce addition and subtraction with different denominators. However I lost Josie at the mixed fractions. Somehow even with the concrete fraction materials, it’s still a little abstract for her to see it represented in written form.

We will move ahead continuing the task cards with Mary and work solely with the fraction pieces for addition, subtraction with the same denominators etc for Josie. Soon, very soon, Mary will be working with different denominators though.

Also we are moving into Harry Potter month (October), so I will soon have some Harry Potter fraction work to add to the shelf. Just for fun.
